Is it a Good Time to Start a Business?

Recently, a dear friend asked me if I thought now was a good time to start a business.

It’s an interesting question given that so much of our normal activities and business are on pause and we really don’t know when/if life will ever be “normal” again.

While it seems some people and businesses are busier than ever, barely able to stay ahead… other businesses are struggling to survive.

Regardless of your situation, the current global pandemic lead to significant reflection on what we value and desire for ourselves and families moving forward.

If you are one of those individuals going through reflection, please keep reading :)

Why You May Consider Starting a Business

In light of the recent workplace changes, the ability to work from home and spend time with your family, you may be enjoying the change of pace.

Life has certainly slowed down — we haven’t had anywhere to go or anyone to see where we need to be rushing around.

…Or maybe you have realized how much your job is weighing you down — that you aren’t enjoying it anymore.

…Or maybe you have just decided that it’s time for a change — and you are ready to do things differently.

Let’s discuss these scenarios and why it may be a great time to start a business!

Making the Shift from Employed to Self Employed

If you have been working for someone else most of your adult life, the idea of shifting to working for yourself can be super scary!

You may not even have any idea what the first step is to make it your full-time income.

However, like anything else, starting a business is a lot of trial and error. People (or the “gurus”) may say there are special formulas or ways to make it work… but don’t be fooled. There aren’t. Each business is unique and each business has it’s own way of working out.

What I Can Guarantee When You Start Your Business

What I can guarantee is, if you decide to start your own business, you have to be willing to roll with the punches, the ups, and the downs, and be ok with failing… over and over again.

From those punches, you can find your unique way that works.

Sometimes you get stuck — and it’s up to you to get yourself out of it.

Other times you have to push yourself even when you do not know the outcome.

You will learn more about yourself, your perseverance, and your own capabilities than you ever knew before.

In my mind, this is a win-win.

Here’s How I Got Started

I’ve been running my own businesses since I was a kid… it started innocently enough as a corner jewelry maker and evolved into graphic design, shipping global products, and designing eCommerce sites.

It was fantastic — alongside helping fund my college education, my side hustles showed me the potential of what I could do. This always stayed in the back of my mind.

Eventually, after graduating from college, I did go into a corporate career, but the side hustles were still around. I dreamed of making them full time, but it didn’t seem like the “responsible” thing to do.

(My feelings on the “security” of a corporate career will be saved for another blog!)

It wasn’t until I became a single mom, trying to balance two young kids, a career, and a home that I knew it was now or never. I quit my corporate job cold turkey and never looked back.

Is it a Good Time to Start a Business?

Yes, I think it’s a great time to start a business!

I’m a big believer that if you want something, you just have to start.

Find that first, single action that you can take to get going, and see where it takes you. With commitment, clarity, and focus, you too can create a successful business that allows you the flexibility and freedom you desire.
